Start Keyboarding Today

If you are reading this post then you are most likely just starting your keyboarding journey. Congratulations, you have taken the first step! For some, this comes naturally and may have been a goal since your very first piano lesson. Maybe you even just started off on keyboards. For others, the concept of playing on a keyboard is foreign, challenging, and met with reluctance. No matter what your background is you can start keyboarding today!

You Are Not Alone

The first step to keyboarding is the same as learning any new skill, playing a new instrument, or making any other changes to your “normal,” and that is realizing you are not alone. People have been playing keyboards for years across all genres and in all settings. More than likely there is someone out there who has been in similar circumstances. This site is dedicated to bringing those people and experiences together to foster community among keyboardists (those in the church specifically). That is a key indicator in itself that you, in fact, are not alone. So take a deep breath, relax, and know that you can do this!

Walk Before You Run

There is an old saying “walk before you run.” In the world of keyboards this is especially true. The sheer number of keyboards, accessories, apps, and sounds is overwhelming! You can literally devote a lifetime to exploring musical technology. In addition, playing a keyboard for the first time can be intimidating let alone trying to buy one.

Raise your hand if you landed here because your music director asked you as the piano player to go buy a church keyboard!

If this single post has you intimidated and wanting to quit already, don’t worry we have quick simple steps to get you started today!

  1. Learn - Read this blog or others. Watch YouTube instructional videos. Ask a fellow keyboardist questions. Anything. Just learn something about keyboarding on a regular basis. You’ve been through piano lessons and learned to play note by painstaking note. The hardest part is behind you!

  2. Try something new every time. Keyboards and apps have a lot of knobs and buttons! Start trying them, figure out what they do, and then try to incorporate that into your playing if/when applicable. This keeps you out of your comfort zone and moving forward. It also reinforces point 1. Don’t worry about learning everything in a day. Just learn 1 thing and build upon that.

Try something new every time you play!

  3. Say yes! Take the opportunities that come your way. They will build experience and confidence. You will grow faster when challenged and given a purpose.

Nord is currently one of the leading names in keyboard manufacturers. They also happen to be a popular pick in churches. You can recognize them by their signature red color. So, start your journey by watching one of their videos. Don’t worry if you don’t know what is being talked about or all of the features they show. Just listen! Listen to the music, the different sounds, the emotion, and the possibilities. Let that stir you and help fuel a passion for learning, creativity, and unlocking new personal potential!

Chris Sereno
Creator of keyboarding.church

I have been playing piano for almost 30 years and have 20 years behind keyboards. I was classically trained through high school and have continued learning through various alternative methods. I have also always loved technology, so I merged my passions and applied the combined skills into keyboarding. The majority of my playing has been dedicated to the church, and my wife (vocals) and I are currently serving at Northwoods Community Church. I created this site to share my knowledge and experience, equip others, and foster community among church pianists/keyboardists. More about me…
