Checklist for Keyboardists

Checklist of items and a process for keyboardists preparing for gigs

Like any hobby keyboarding can result in acquiring a lot of gear. Here is a simple checklist to keep track of it all and help with transporting and setup. If there are other items that should be on this list let me know in the comments!

Basics

  • Keyboard Stand
  • Stool, chair, or bench
  • Surge protector (power strip or UPS)
  • Power cord
  • Primary keyboard
  • Secondary keyboard(s)

Audio

  • At least 2 sets of audio cables
  • Direct box
  • Monitors or in-ear headphones
  • In-ear personal mixer
  • Speakers or PA system
  • Microphone

Accessories

  • Music stand
  • Sustain pedal
  • Expression pedal
  • Program pedal
  • Bluetooth pedal for music and MIDI controls
  • Tablet/phone holder
  • Charging/power cable(s) for aux devices
  • Light(s) - for sheet music, ambience, or otherwise
  • USB cables and connected devices
  • Cleaning cloth

MIDI

  • Any MIDI connected keyboards or controllers
  • Audio interface
  • Laptop or tablet or phone and cables
  • Apps and sounds opened with plugins loaded

Workflow

  1. Setup stand and seat
  2. Setup keyboard(s)
  3. Place controllers, USB, and MIDI devices
  4. Place music and tablet stands
  5. Place laptop and tablet
  6. Position pedals
  7. Connect cables
  8. Complete cable runs and bracing straps
  9. Power on keyboards
  10. Power on laptop
  11. Load programs, presets, apps, and plugins
  12. Test audio
  13. Test accessories
